Jordi Gomez strikes late to rescue point for Wigan Athletic

Jordi Gomez hits a late free kick to rescue a 2-2 draw for Wigan against Middlesbrough.

A late Jordi Gomez free kick rescued a point for Wigan Athletic this afternoon after Middlesbrough had come from behind to take a 2-1 lead.

Wigan broke the deadlock after 17 minutes when Grant Holt converted from the penalty spot following George Friend's foul on Marc-Antoine Fortune inside the box.

Middlesbrough set about looking for an equaliser and almost found it when Lukas Jutkiewicz forced Scott Carson into a full-stretch save.

Carson was called upon again moments later when Mustapha Carayol managed to squeeze a shot out from a tight angle, but the Wigan keeper was on hand to save with his legs.

They did eventually find a way past Carson, however, as Friend made up for giving away the penalty by netting the equaliser right on the stroke of half time.

The hosts came agonisingly close to regaining the lead just after the hour mark when Fortune found James McCarthy, but his shot didn't have enough on it to take it over the line.

Middlesbrough almost made it 2-1 in the 65th minute when Albert Adomah found a way through but saw his shot saved with only Carson to beat.

The visitors did take the lead 10 minutes later after Wigan failed to deal with a high ball into the box, allowing Adomah to find Grant Leadbitter, who had a simple tap-in.

The hosts then restored parity with five minutes left of normal time when Gomez fired a fine free kick through the wall to ensure that the spoils were shared.
