Tottenham Hotspur will reportedly not be signing RB Leipzig's Timo Werner on a permanent deal during next summer's transfer window.

Tottenham Hotspur will reportedly not be signing Timo Werner on a permanent deal during next summer's transfer window.

The Germany international scored twice in 14 appearances for Spurs in the second half of the 2023-24 campaign after making the move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on loan from RB Leipzig.

Werner returned to Tottenham on a season-long loan over the summer, with the North London club having the option to sign him on a permanent basis next summer for a fee in the region of £8.5m.

However, according to GIVEMESPORT, the Germany international has 'failed to win over influential figures' at the club, and he will therefore not be making a permanent return to the Premier League with Tottenham.

Werner has featured on 19 occasions for Tottenham during the 2024-25 campaign, scoring once and registering three assists in the process, but he was heavily criticised by his manager Ange Postecoglou for his performance in the first half of Thursday's Europa League contest with Rangers.

Tottenham 'decide against' permanent Werner move

Werner was replaced at the interval of what proved to be a 1-1 draw, with Postecoglou saying after the match that the German was substituted due to his underwhelming performance in the first 45 minutes.

"He wasn't playing anywhere near the level he should," Postecoglou told reporters. "When you've got 18-year-olds [playing], it's not acceptable to me. I said that to Timo, he's a senior international, he's a German international.

"In the moment we're in right now, it's not like we've got many options. I need everyone to at least be going out there trying to give the best of themselves. His performance in the first half wasn't acceptable."

Werner has a record of three goals and six assists in 33 appearances for Tottenham, and Postecoglou insisted during his press conference on Friday that he was not 'criticising' the attacker, rather 'assessing' his performance.

Postecoglou: 'Werner did not reach required level vs. Rangers'

"With Timo it wasn't about whether he played well or not. It was a difficult game last night. I'm asking 18-year-olds to do some massive jobs and you want senior players – and he's a senior player, he's an international and he's won the Champions League – there's a level of application and performance you need to rise to to help the team. He didn't reach that," said the manager.

"Me taking him off at half-time was a statement enough. The same way I won't be hiding behind poor team performances, the same with and no different for the players or anyone else. It wasn't criticism, it was just an assessment of his performance and on a really challenging night for us, it needs to be better.

"We're in a fight here, collectively we're in a fight. I'm not going to go around worrying about people's bruised egos. This football club, we want to achieve things and be successful. We're down to the bare bones in players. If there's somebody in the dressing room who's fit, able to contribute but who feels he needs something extra in this moment, he's probably not the right type."

Tottenham will be aiming to record their first victory since November 23 when they head to basement side Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday night.
