Three goalkeepers that Manchester United could sign this summer

Sports Mole picks out three goalkeepers that Manchester United could sign this summer to act as number two to David de Gea.

Manchester United are expected to be in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer, with Dean Henderson said to be closing in on a switch to Nottingham Forest.

Henderson was unable to displace David de Gea as the club's number one stopper next term, and the latter is expected to keep hold of the gloves under new head coach Erik ten Hag.

As a result, Henderson is likely to depart, while Lee Grant announced his retirement over the summer, which would leave Tom Heaton as the only first-team back-up to De Gea in Manchester.

With that in mind, Sports Mole picks out three goalkeepers that could potentially join Man United during this summer's transfer window with a view to being a number two.

Karl Darlow (Newcastle United)

Karl Darlow still has more than three years left to run on his contract at Newcastle, but the Magpies are believed to be open to letting him leave in the current market.

The 31-year-old played eight straight Premier League games last season between September 17 and November 20 before losing his spot in the side to Martin Dubravka.

Darlow has made 52 Premier League appearances during his career, while he is one short of 100 outings for Newcastle in all competitions, having joined the club from Nottingham Forest in 2014.

It is difficult to imagine the Englishman displacing De Gea at Old Trafford, but he would allegedly be happy with a back-up role at the club, potentially featuring in the cup competitions next term.

Daniel Bachmann (Watford)

Last month, Watford goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann confirmed that Man United were interested in signing him, telling Sky Sports Austria that he had been in contact with the 20-time English champions.

"There has been contact with Manchester United. It hasn't just fallen out of the sky... several clubs have shown interest in me - but the most intensive contacts have come from Manchester. It is a massive honour for a club like that to be interested in you.

"I would be second choice behind David de Gea, who has been one of the Premier League's best keepers for years. But anything can happen in football. The performance principle applies. As a result, even big stars can sit on the subs' bench."

The 27-year-old is widely expected to leave the Hornets this summer following their relegation to the Championship despite still having two years left to run on his contract.

The Austria international only made 12 Premier League appearances last term, but he was between the sticks for the team's final match of the 2021-22 campaign at Chelsea.

Bachmann has played 41 times for Watford in all competitions, while he has also been capped on 13 times by his country, with his last outing coming against Scotland in March.

Robby McCrorie (Rangers)

Rangers goalkeeper Robby McCrorie has also emerged as a possible target for Man United this summer.

The 24-year-old only made two appearances at club level during the 2021-22 campaign, and he will soon enter the final year of his contract at Ibrox.

According to The Sun, a number of clubs are keeping a close eye on the situation, and Man United head coach Ten Hag has been alerted to the stopper's potential availability.

Jon McLaughlin could allegedly be Rangers' number one goalkeeper next term, and McCrorie would rather move elsewhere than sit on the bench for the Gers.

The Scot came through the youth system at Rangers but has only made two first-team appearances for the club, spending time out on loan with Berwick Rangers, Greenock Morton, Queen of the South and Livingston.
