Michael Carrick hails Anthony Martial introduction after Liverpool scalp

Michael Carrick hails Anthony Martial for the first impression that he made on English football after netting a debut goal in Man United's 3-1 win over Liverpool.

Michael Carrick has heralded Manchester United new boy Anthony Martial for the way in which the £36m man announced himself to the Premier League.

The French striker, 19, came off the bench to score a stylish third goal in Saturday's 3-1 win over bitter rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford.

United made Martial the most expensive teenager in history on deadline day and, given the spotlight and opposition, Carrick says that things could not have gone much better on his debut.

"It doesn't get any better than that does it? Coming in and coming on, scoring against Liverpool like that," he told the club's official website. "He has done well to get in that position and I thought the finish was terrific, how he just slotted it home, he was so calm and composed. You can't ask for a better start.

"He is off the mark now. He has announced himself and everyone has seen it on the big stage. It's a good start for him. I am sure his confidence will be sky high after that.

"It's a good way to settle him and if that has raised expectations then so be it, but that is part of the game."

Martial, who has earned comparisons with legendary Arsenal marksman Thierry Henry, joined from AS Monaco.

With 10 points from a possible 15, the Red Devils sit third in the table.
