Wayne Rooney: 'Manchester United can go far in Champions League'

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney believes that the club can "go really far" in the Champions League this season.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has expressed his belief that the team can "go really far" in the Champions League this season.

United have suffered a torrid campaign domestically in David Moyes's first year in charge, suffering shock exits from both cup competitions and sitting sixth in the Premier League, 11 points off fourth-placed Liverpool.

However, Europe has provided an outlet for the Red Devils and they go into the first leg of their last-16 tie against Olympiacos tomorrow unbeaten in the tournament so far, prompting Rooney to dream of lifting the trophy for a second time.

"We've certainly got the quality in the team to go really far so hopefully we can do that. We've been excellent in the Champions League this year and hopefully we can take that into the game tomorrow night," Rooney is quoted as saying by PA.

"You always want to win it. One is never enough, especially at this club. We need to keep trying to get into finals. The feeling you get when you win a trophy is incredible so you don't want to stop at one. If we can go to final it'd be great for us. It would be an opportunity to win another trophy, so hopefully we can do that.

"I grew up all my life wanting to win trophies. That's the main aim. That's what you'll be judged on when you finish your career."

Rooney recently signed a lucrative new contract with United that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2019.
