James Milner: 'League Cup is not a lesser competition'

Manchester City midfielder James Milner insists that the League Cup is not a "lesser competition".

James Milner has insisted that the League Cup is not a "lesser competition" ahead of today's final.

Manchester City take on Sunderland at Wembley this afternoon as they look to win the competition for the third time in their history.

The City midfielder told The Telegraph: "People talk of it being a lesser competition but I think that's nonsense. It is a major trophy, anyone would love to have it on the CV.

"Turning back up at Wembley those memories of last year [when City lost to Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup final] should flood back for a few that were there, they will not want to have those feelings again at the end of the game.

"That memory will stick with me forever. We got it wrong tactically and didn't perform. Wigan deserved it but it still hurts. These chances of winning medals don't come around too often."

Milner played in the 2010 final during his time at Aston Villa, losing to Manchester United.
