Steven Gerrard: 'Liverpool can compete next season'

Steven Gerrard says that his former club Liverpool have a "fantastic core of players" that will be competitive next season.

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has claimed that the club can be "very competitive" next season.

The Reds were tipped by many to put up another title challenge during the last campaign, but they finished a disappointing sixth in the Premier League table and also failed to pick up any silverware.

They have moved quickly to rebuild their squad since the end of season, with James Milner and Danny Ings both arriving at Anfield, and Gerrard is confident that the club will be able to challenge for major honours once again.

"I don't think problems at Liverpool are as big as people are making out," Gerrard said at the launch of BT Sport Europe.

"I think there's a fantastic core of players there that, with the right additions in the staff and playing staff, I think Liverpool can be very competitive next year."

Gerrard is set to continue his career at MLS side Los Angeles Galaxy.
