Preview: Millwall vs. Huddersfield Town - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Wednesday's Championship fixture between Millwall and Huddersfield Town, including team news and predicted lineups.

Millwall and Huddersfield Town head into their season-ending encounter in the Championship with little to play for apart from pride.

The home side can still finish as high as seventh in the table if they prevail at the Den on Wednesday evening, while the visitors, although not mathematically safe, know that another three points will ensure that they end the campaign no lower than 18th position.

Having recorded three wins from their last five matches, Millwall boss Gary Rowett will feel disappointed that his side are now out of contention for a place in the top six.

The two defeats during that period have been against Middlesbrough and Queens Park Rangers, sides who have been inconsistent since the resumption in June.

Nevertheless, despite that added frustration, Rowett can reflect on a positive first season at The Den ahead of looking to make some shrewd additions during the summer.

Providing that they avoid a heavy defeat on Wednesday, it will be Millwall's second top-10 finish in three years, suggesting that the foundations are in place ahead of the next campaign.

That does not seem to be the case at opponents Huddersfield, who surprisingly parted company with Danny Cowley less than 48 hours after their victory over West Bromwich Albion last week.

The result realistically secured the club's place in the Championship for another 12 months, ensuring that Cowley fulfilled the objective given to him when arriving at the John Smith's Stadium in September.

While a club statement suggested 'a change of direction', there is a feeling of uncertainty as the Terriers board allegedly attempt to secure the services of Leeds United assistant Carlos Corberan.

Cowley has departed the Yorkshire outfit having recorded nine points from his last six matches, putting the club in a position where only a defeat, wins for at least three of the four clubs directly behind them and a 14-goal swing will lead to their relegation.

Team News

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and Matt Smith could be brought back into the Millwall starting lineup.

Derby County loanee Mason Bennett will not feature after picking up an injury against Queens Park Rangers, while Tom Bradshaw may also drop out of the team.

Jayson Molumby is also an option for the Lions in the centre of midfield.

Huddersfield's caretaker boss Danny Schofield may show some priority to players who are contracted to the club, rather than a number of loanees.

That could see the likes of Andy King and Chris Willock replaced by Alex Pritchard and Karlan Grant respectively.

Millwall possible starting lineup:
Bialkowski; Hutchinson, Pearce, Cooper; Romeo, Molumby, Woods, Ferguson; J.Wallace, Bodvarsson; Smith

Huddersfield Town possible starting lineup:
Lossl; Chalobah, Stearman, Schindler, Toffolo; O'Brien, Hogg; Bacuna, Pritchard, Grant; Campbell

We say: Millwall 3-1 Huddersfield Town

With Huddersfield lacking a permanent manager and players likely to be contemplating their futures, everything points to Millwall taking advantage in an open game of football in East London.
