Jose Riga returns to Charlton Athletic

Jose Riga returns to manage Charlton Athletic, having previously had a brief stint in charge at The Valley in 2014.

Charlton Athletic have re-appointed Jose Riga as head coach on an 18-month contract.

The 58-year-old had a two-month stint in charge at The Valley in 2014 and during that time he guided the club to Championship survival, before he moved on to Blackpool.

However, having recently departed French club Metz, the Addicks have once again turned to Riga to get them out of relegation trouble.

"Jose did an excellent job in his short period with Charlton two seasons ago," owner Roland Duchatelet told the club's official website.

"He was very popular with supporters and I believe that he will get us back on track. There are 20 matches of the season still to play and it's vital that we battle for every point."

Riga will inherit a side that is without a win from their last 10 outings in all competitions, which in turn has seen them drop to 23rd in the table.

Discussing the club's current predicament, Duchatelet added that the board must shoulder some of the responsibility.

"This has been a disappointing season for everyone connected with Charlton and the board take responsibility for that," he said.

"Some things, like an unprecedented number of injuries, we could not have foreseen. But we have also made errors in recruitment, mistakes we have immediately tried to address in January."

Riga will begin his second stint at the Charlton helm with a trip to second-placed Hull City on Saturday afternoon.
