Leroy Fer hands Swansea City late win at Burnley

Leroy Fer scores eight minutes from time as Swansea City pick up a hard-fought win at Burnley.

Leroy Fer's 82nd-minute close-range strike saw Swansea City register an opening-day victory away to newly-promoted Burnley this afternoon.

After a cagey opening, summer signing Fernando Llorente almost opened his account for the Swans on his debut as he made space for himself to meet Wayne Routledge's cross, but he produced a weak header which failed to trouble Tom Heaton.

The Spaniard was involved again later in the first half when he took advantage of Ben Mee's complacency in possession, but struggled to test Heaton with a timid strike.

Swansea wasted the best chance of the half when Modou Barrow crossed for Routledge, who fired a shot wide before Andre Gray brought a save out of Lukasz Fabianski moments later.

Burnley looked more threatening after the break, with Fabianski called into action again to turn away a well-struck volley from Sam Vokes before Matt Lowton dragged another effort wide just after the hour.

Gylfi Sigurdsson, on as a substitute for the final 30 minutes, then came close to breaking the deadlock with a dipping free kick which Heaton tipped away.

With the game seemingly heading for a draw, it was Jefferson Montero, a constant threat after coming on as a second-half replacement, who crossed for Llorente and after Heaton saved his initial effort, Fer was on hand to slot into the net.

Gray almost provided an immediate response for the hosts from a few yards out, but managed to miss the target as the Swans held on for victory.
