Queen's address to nation watched by 23.5 million
A combined audience of 23.5 million watched The Queen deliver an address to the nation last night amid the coronavirus outbreak.

A combined audience of 23.5 million tuned in to watch The Queen's address to the nation last night, according to overnight viewing figures.

The speech - delivered in light of the coronavirus outbreak - was simulcast across all of the main channels and saw the long-serving monarch tell the public: "We will be with our friends again, we will be with our families again, we will meet again."

The majority of UK viewers tuned in for the BBC One broadcast, with 14.1 million (47.5%) watching, while the ITV version had 5.3 million (18.0%), Channel 4 2.0 million (7.3%) and Channel 5 610,000 (2.1%).

A further 800,000 watched on Sky News, with 700,000 viewing on BBC News for a combined total of 23.5 million - an impressive figure, albeit almost 5 million short of the total for Prime Minister Boris Johnson's lockdown announcement a fortnight ago.

The address was also broadcast live around the world, including the US, meaning that the total worldwide audience is likely to be in the hundreds of millions.
