All Creatures Great and Small reboot becomes huge hit for Channel 5

The reboot of All Creatures Great and Small launches to impressive ratings on Channel 5.

The first episode of the rebooted All Creatures Great and Small has smashed Channel 5's ratings record for an original UK drama.

The show - following Yorkshire vets and associates - was a firm favourite for the BBC in the 1980s and has been resurrected with a cast including Dame Diana Rigg, Nigel Havers, Nicholas Ralph and Anna Madeley.

According to overnight ratings data, the opening episode brought in an average of 3.3 million viewers and a 20.4% audience share on Tuesday night, easily beating the 2.1 million (12.3%) record set by The Deceived just last month.

The figures easily made Channel 5 the most-watched broadcaster in the 9pm hour, ahead of the 2 million (12%) for War on Plastic with Hugh and Anita on BBC One and the 1.4 million (8.4%) who tuned in to ITV's one-off Sheridan Smith: Becoming Mum.

Channel 5 has already renewed All Creatures for a second season, while a Christmas special has also been filmed for broadcast later this year.
