Ex-Royal Marine JJ Chalmers joins Strictly lineup

Former Royal Marine JJ Chalmers is unveiled as Strictly Come Dancing's eighth celebrity participant.

Former Royal Marine and TV presenter JJ Chalmers has been named as the eighth celebrity taking part in Strictly Come Dancing.

The BBC is gradually revealing the lineup for this year's show, with others confirmed so far including Bill Bailey, Caroline Quentin, Nicola Adams, Clara Amfo, Jason Bell, Max George and Ranvir Singh.

Chalmers - a close friend of Prince Harry - suffered life-changing injuries while serving in Afghanistan with the Marines but has gone on to develop a career hosting coverage of disability sports events, including the Paralympics.

"My whole life is defined by facing challenges," the 33-year-old said. "Whether it's becoming a Royal Marine Commando, recovering from my injuries sustained in Afghanistan to competing in The Invictus Games.

"Now as a TV presenter I'm lucky enough to witness some of the greatest sporting contests in the world.

"Strictly is a whole different ball game in respect to the challenges I will face but I'm up for an adventure and at least my mum will know where I am!"

The new series begins on BBC One in late October.
