Annie Mac announces her exit from Radio 1 after 17 years, with Clara Amfo taking over her Future Sounds show.

Annie Mac has announced that she will leave Radio 1 this summer after 17 years with the station.

The 42-year-old DJ - presenter of the 6pm-8pm slot on weekday evenings - explained in a lengthy Instagram post that she had taken the decision in order to spend more time with her two children, aged just seven and four.

"I need more time to see my kids in the evenings now they are both in school," she wrote. "I would like more time to write fiction and to create podcasts.

"I also love the idea of leaving the party (and make no mistake working at Radio 1 does feel like a party) with a huge smile on my face, when I'm still having the most fun I can have."

In confirming the news, the BBC revealed that Clara Amfo would take over the Future Sounds show from Mondays to Thursdays, with Danny Howard presenting Radio 1's Dance Party on Friday nights.

Other changes at R1 announced today include the departure of dance DJ Diplo and Rickie, Melvin and Charlie taking over Live Lounge from Amfo.

"Annie Mac is quite simply a legend, and has been a hugely important part of the station for the past 17 years," said Aled Haydn Jones, head of BBC Radio 1.

"Diplo has brought some of the biggest names in dance to our listeners on Diplo and Friends, showcasing some now iconic mixes during the show's run.

"I'd like to thank both Annie and Diplo for all they've done for the station, and I wish them all the very best for the future."

Mac's final show will air on July 30 - 17 years and one day since her debut.
