Stanley Johnson: 'Boris almost took one for the team'

Stanley Johnson gives his reaction after his son Boris is moved out of intensive care.

Boris Johnson's father Stanley has said that the Prime Minister "almost took one for the team" in his battle with coronavirus.

The PM was admitted to intensive care on Monday night after falling seriously ill with COVID-19 but was moved back out of the ICU last night after making a steady recovery.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4, Stanley revealed that he was "relieved" to see his son back on the mend but warned that it will take some time before he can return to work fully.

"I do think about this whole event of Boris going into intensive care, now happily coming out, it has actually served an amazing purpose in a sense it's got the whole country to realise this is a serious event," he said. "If it can hit the Prime Minister for heaven's sake, well, you know, it does come close to home. It's certainly made me feel cautious.

"To use that American expression, he almost took one for the team. We've got to make sure we play the game properly now.

"This is pretty straightforward now. He must rest up. As I understand it, he has moved from the ICU into a recovery unit but I don't think you can say this is out of the woods now. He has to take time. I cannot believe you can walk away from this and get straight back to Downing Street and pick up the reins without a period of readjustment."

The government are urging the British public to remain indoors in the days ahead over what is expected to be an extremely warm Easter weekend.
