Richard Osman becomes the first debut novelist to top the book charts at Christmas since records began.

Richard Osman has become the first debut novelist to to top the book charts at Christmas.

The Pointless presenter, 50, released crime novel The Thursday Murder Club - about a group of OAPs solving murders in their retirement village - in September and it has since shifted almost 700,000 copies.

In the week up to Saturday, it sold 134,514 copies alone - easily the winner of the race for Christmas number one and the biggest Christmas seller since Jamie Oliver's 30-Minute Meals 10 years ago.

Barack Obama's memoir A Promised Land was a distant second with 66,531 copies sold, while David Walliams - winner of three of the last four Christmas battles - had to settle for third with Code Name Bananas, which managed to shift 55,129.

Osman has already penned a follow-up book for release in 2021, while Steven Spielberg has acquired the film rights to the series.
