Harry Styles hits top spot in US with Watermelon Sugar

Harry Styles claims his first US number one as 'Watermelon Sugar' tops the Billboard Hot 100 nine months after it was first released.

Harry Styles has claimed his first US number one as 'Watermelon Sugar' hit the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100.

The track - apparently about "touching" - was given an official release in May but has been available for around nine months.

The song was number seven in the charts last week but a huge surge in digital sales this week saw it rise to the summit, usurping Taylor Swift's 'Cardigan' in the process.

'Watermelon Sugar' is only the second solo effort from a One Direction member to top the US charts, with Zayn Malik's 'Pillowtalk' having hit the dizzy height in 2016.

Despite the group's unprecedented worldwide success, the boyband never claimed a US number one themselves, peaking at two with 'Best Song Ever'.
