James Cameron reveals filming complete on Avatar 2

James Cameron reveals that filming on Avatar 2 is complete, with Avatar 3 almost in the bag too.

James Cameron has announced that filming on the first sequel to Avatar has finally been completed in New Zealand.

Following the unprecedented success of the first movie in 2009 - the highest-grossing film ever until Avengers: Endgame was released last year - four sequels were ordered, all of which are being filmed back to back.

The release of Avatar 2 has been delayed multiple times and following a halt in production caused by coronavirus, it is now due out at the end of 2022.

"Covid hit us like it hit everybody - we lost about four and a half months of production," Cameron said at an environmental conference in Austria.

"As a result of that, we've rolled around one more full year for a release in December of 2022. That's been announced already.

"Now that doesn't mean I have an extra year to finish the film, because the day we deliver Avatar 2 we'll just start working on finishing Avatar 3.

"So where we are right now, I'm down in New Zealand shooting. We're shooting the remainder of the live action. We've got about 10% left to go.

"We're 100% complete on Avatar 2 and we're sort of 95% complete on Avatar 3."

The sequels will be released every two years, culminating with Avatar 5 in December 2028.
