Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies reveals that bonus material has been shot for the upcoming 60th anniversary.

Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has revealed that an extra treat has been planned for the show's upcoming 60th anniversary.

Three special episodes - featuring David Tennant as a new incarnation of The Doctor - are due to air in November to mark the milestone birthday, after which Ncuti Gatwa assumes the mantle for the Christmas special.

Davies has now teased details of what could be an extra mini-episode, however, writing in Doctor Who Magazine: "As the summer began, I was thinking about the 60th and wondered 'have we done enough?'

"So I had an idea on July 5, sent a formal proposal to the team on July 20, then three scriptwriters got to work, and now, just two months later, in the second half of September, we're about to embark on a 6-day studio shoot of brand new material that will make you FIZZ! I promise!"

Further details of the new material have yet to be revealed, although Davies's use of the word "fizz" could hint at The Fizzinator, a special straw used by the Eleventh Doctor - potentially meaning a cameo return to the role for Matt Smith.

Earlier this week it was also announced that more than 800 episodes of Doctor Who and its spinoff shows will be added to BBC iPlayer on November 1.
