Former Coronation Street star Nick Cochrane calls for his character Andy McDonald to return for the soap's 60th anniversary later this year.

Former Coronation Street actor Nick Cochrane has called for his character Andy McDonald to return to the cobbles as the soap prepares to celebrate its 60th anniversary in December.

Andy first arrived in Weatherfield in 1989 alongside twin brother Steve (Simon Gregson), dad Jim (Charles Lawson) and mum Liz (Beverley Callard) and was an integral part of the show until 1997, when Cochrane was axed by a new executive producer.

Since then Andy has made a handful of guest appearances but has now not been seen in 11 years and Cochrane thinks that the time is now right for a comeback.

"It would be good if the boys got back in touch and Andy ends up back in Weatherfield," he told the Distinct Nostalgia podcast.

"It would be good if Steve needed an organ [transplant] or there were some reason why one of us stays and one goes. That would be best for me... it would be a good storyline."

Cochrane also admitted fears that his character could be recast, adding: "What I dread is Andy coming back and it's not me because, let's be honest, that could happen, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it."

Coronation Street continues Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV.
