Helen Worth's Gail Platt will get married for a seventh time before leaving Coronation Street this Christmas, it has been reported.
The iconic character will bow out over the festive period after 50 years on the cobbles - a stint during which Gail has been decidedly unlucky in love, with first and second husband Brian Tilsley being murdered, third husband Martin Platt (Sean Wilson) cheating on her, fourth husband Richard Hillman being exposed as a serial killer, fifth Joe McIntyre accidentally killing himself and sixth husband Michael Rodwell also being murdered.
The original plans for Worth's exit involved Wilson reprising his role as Martin, with the couple then reuniting before leaving the street together, but Wilson's big comeback was suddenly scrapped for unknown reasons.
Producers then decided to reintroduce the character of Jesse Chadwick (John Thomson) as a potential new love interest for Gail, and according to The Mirror, they will now embark upon a whirlwind romance before tying the knot.
A source told the newspaper: "Helen and Gail have been part of the fabric of Coronation Street since 1974, so only a truly big exit storyline would be fitting for her.
"The wedding scenes are being filmed at the moment and when they air, viewers will be gripped. As with any soap wedding, they will have to wait to see whether Gail makes it down the aisle or not. And with a character as popular as her, they will be hoping she finally gets a happy ending."
Coronation Street continues Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and from 7am on ITVX.
