Laura Kuenssberg is reportedly in talks about stepping down as BBC political editor after more than six years in order to take up a new role on Radio 4's Today programme.

BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg is reportedly in talks about stepping down in order to move across to Radio 4's Today programme.

The 45-year-old was appointed to the role in July 2015 as the BBC's first ever female political editor and has overseen one of the most turbulent periods of modern British political history, including the Brexit vote, two general elections and the coronavirus crisis.

According to The Guardian, the deal has "yet to be signed off" and there is no current timeframe for her departure, although the BBC is said to be keen to have her successor bed in well before the next general election.

The newspaper also claims that the corporation is looking to firm up its on-air senior news and political reporting team ahead of the potential death of The Queen at some point in the next five years, with Andrew Marr having been offered a new long-term contract and talks with Huw Edwards ongoing.

A BBC spokesperson refused to be drawn on the report about Kuenssberg, commenting that it is "a bit soon" to speculate about a job which 'isn't actually vacant'.
