Disney+ smashes targets with 86.8 million subscribers

Disney hits 86.8 million subscribers worldwide in just over a year since the streaming service's launch.

Disney+ has accrued 86.8 million subscribers worldwide in a little over a year since its launch, the company announced on Thursday.

The streaming service, which has an extensive archive including the MCU, The Simpsons and the Star Wars franchise, had set a provisional aim of 60 to 90 million subscribers by 2024.

Partly due to the coronavirus lockdown and an accelerated rollout of the service around the world, Disney+ passed the 60 million mark in early August and at its last count at the end of September, reported having 73.7 million subscribers.

In a conference call for investors today, Disney chief exec Bob Chapek revealed that the number had swelled to 86.8 million in the two months since, helped mainly by the release of season two of The Mandalorian.

If the signup rate is maintained through Christmas, Disney+ could realistically expect to hit the milestone 100 million subscriber mark by as soon as February next year.
