Britain's Got Talent draws 1,121 complaints after Black Lives Matter routine

Saturday's episode of Britain's Got Talent prompted more than 1,000 complaints to TV regulator Ofcom after a performance from Diversity inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement.

Diversity's Black Lives Matter-inspired routine on Saturday night's Britain's Got Talent contributed to the show drawing more than 1,100 complaints from viewers.

The powerful performance from Ashley Banjo's dance troupe referenced the civil unrest in the US prompted by the death of George Floyd at the hands of the police force.

In the routine a white policeman was seen kneeling on Banjo's neck alongside vocals of "I can't breathe" - Floyd's final words.

"I can confirm that we have received 1,121 complaints for Britain's Got Talent on 5 September, most of which were in relation to the Diversity performance," a spokesman for TV regulator Ofcom told the Daily Mail.

"We are assessing the complaints against our broadcasting rules, but are yet to decide whether or not to investigate."

While the performance drew much praise on social media, others were less impressed, with one writing: "Disgraceful! Make political statements elsewhere not on a family TV show."

Another added: "Wrong time and place. BGT should be a lovely entertainment show not political. I had thoroughly enjoyed the show and forgot the troubles of the world and then thud!"

Britain's Got Talent continues Saturday at 8pm on ITV.
