Members of Barcelona's first-team squad reportedly had issues with the Catalan giants being interested in signing Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford during the winter transfer window.

Marcus Rashford signing for Barcelona during the winter transfer window would have allegedly not gone down well with the first-team squad.

The future of the Manchester United forward was a hot topic for debate throughout the winter transfer window until he signed on loan for Aston Villa.

Rashford's switch to the West Midlands came after weeks of reports indicating that a transfer to a foreign club was deem more likely.

Barcelona were said to be in the running for the England international until finances ultimately played their part in an approach being scrapped.

Nevertheless, according to Sport, members of the senior ranks would not have been in favour of a deal.

Why would Rashford transfer have divided opinion?

The report suggests that a number of players were of the opinion that any money made available should have been used to reward them.

In recent years, there have been several instances where Barcelona players have renegotiated contracts in order to help the club's ailing financial situation.

Furthermore, it is stated that no players have any personal issue with Rashford, it merely being a case of not approving how any available funds were being spent.

Barcelona's coffers have since been boosted by receiving a sell-on clause from Nico Gonzalez's switch from Porto to Manchester City.

Would Rashford have played regularly at Barcelona?

When every player is fit, Hansi Flick has an established front three of Lamine Yamal, Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski.

Dani Olmo and Ferran Torres are also in line to earn weekly minutes for the remainder of the campaign, posing the question of where Rashford would fit in.

As well as being a direct alternative to Lewandowski, Rashford would have been viewed similarly when it came to the flanks.

At Aston Villa, Rashford stands to become first choice on the left flank as well as provide competition to Ollie Watkins down the middle.
