Roberto Martinez praises "superb" Barnsley following hard-fought League Cup win

Everton coach Roberto Martinez heaps praise on Barnsley as Lee Johnson's men run the Toffees close in their League Cup second-round fixture at Oakwell.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez has heaped praise on Barnsley after Lee Johnson's men forced the Toffees into extra time during their League Cup fixture.

The Merseyside club eventually won out 5-3 on the night, but were made to work hard by the League One side who turned in a memorable performance at Oakwell.

"I thought Barnsley were superb throughout - dynamic and clinical," Martinez told Sky Sports News after the game.

"We were a little slow in the first half and showed poor focus in front of goal. It was a test to see if we could come back into the scoreline, but it was terrific to see the younger players showing up after a performance that was not acceptable in the first half.

"They reacted with desire in the second half and that shows how much this matters and how much we wanted to progress."

Everton return to Premier League action when they travel to face Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
