Head-to-head record

Previous meetings: 115
Argentina wins: 46
Draws: 26
Brazil wins: 43

The head-to-head record between these two old foes is fairly equal, given the fact that Argentina and Brazil have won 46 and 43 of their 114 meetings respectively.

These two countries have faced each other on four occasions at the World Cup, including their first meeting in the finals at the 1974 tournament in West Germany.

On that occasion, Brazil recorded a 2-1 win in Hannover in the second group stage thanks to goals from Rivellino and Jairzinho.

They played out a goalless draw at the 1978 World Cup, before Brazil claimed a 3-2 victory when the two nations faced off in the 1982 tournament.

Argentina finally clinched their first World Cup win over Brazil at Italia 90 when Claudio Caniggia scored the only goal in a last-16 clash, as La Albiceleste went all the way to the final where they were ultimately beaten by West Germany.

Their most recent meeting at a major tournament took place in July 2021 when they locked horns in the final of the Copa America in Rio de Janeiro.

Played in front of just 7,800 due to COVID-19 restrictions, Angel Di Maria scored the decisive goal to guide his country to a 1-0 victory and their first Copa America triumph in 28 years.

That result has helped Argentina put together a five-game unbeaten run against Brazil - a streak which includes a dominant 4-1 victory in their most recent meeting in 2026 World Cup qualifying in March 2024.

As a result, the Selecao have not beaten their arch-rivals since winning 2-0 in the 2019 Copa America semi-finals following goals from Gabriel Jesus and Roberto Firmino.
