Netflix announces that production has finally begun on the fifth and final season of Stranger Things.

Production on the fifth and final season of Stranger Things is underway, Netflix has announced.

The '80s-set fantasy drama - one of the streamer's most successful shows ever - will conclude with an eight-episode finale, with filming due to begin in the coming months ahead of an expected release in 2025.

The cast had been due to start filming last summer but the Hollywood writers' strike led to a delay of more than six months, but in a news alert this week Netflix confirmed that production has started.

A behind-the-scenes photo depicted key cast and crew - including the likes of Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp and Millie Bobby Brown - gathered together for what appeared to be a script read-through.

Speaking about the final season recently, co-creator Matt Duffer said: "Characters are already going to be in action, they're already going to have a goal and a drive, and I think that's going to carve out at least a couple hours and make this season feel really different.

"I'm sure the wrap-up will be a lot longer. It's going to be Return of the King-ish with, like, eight endings."

News of the final season comes just weeks after a prequel theatre show, Stranger Things: The First Shadow, launched in London's West End.
