Benedict Cumberbatch suggests that he may never return to the titular role in Sherlock.

Benedict Cumberbatch has suggested that Sherlock may never return for fresh episodes.

The mystery crime drama - based on the famous Sherlock Holmes novels - stars Cumberbatch as the titular detective, joined by Martin Freeman as his loyal sidekick Dr Watson.

Having debuted in 2010, the show has aired for just 13 episodes to date - the most recent of which was broadcast eight years ago in January 2017.

The question of Cumberbatch and Freeman, who have since become huge big-screen stars, reprising the roles has repeatedly come up in the years since, but Cumberbatch was skeptical when asked by Variety what it would take for him to return.

"A lot of money," he joked, adding: "It would take it to be better than it ever was. You leave them or yourselves wanting more.

"There's always that itch to scratch, but I think it would have to be the superlative version of what we've already achieved."

Speaking in 2022, Freeman described the prospect of Sherlock's return as "never a completely shut door".
