Gary Glitter receives coronavirus vaccine

Gary Glitter reportedly receives his first shot of the coronavirus vaccine while in prison for child sex offences.

Convicted paedophile Gary Glitter has received his first dose of the coronavirus vaccine in prison.

The 76-year-old is currently six years into a 16-year prison term at HMP The Verne in Dorset, having been found guilty of historical offences including having sex with a girl under the age of 13 in 2015.

Members of the UK population aged 70 or over - including prisoners - are currently eligible for the vaccine, with jailed paedophiles more likely to receive it than a typical prisoner because the average age of a convicted paedophile is greater.

"Many have been jailed in recent years for horrific crimes dating back decades," a source told The Sun. "You have some prisons where there's a significant group of elderly sex offenders all in their 70s and 80s.

"Because of their age, they will get the vaccine first. But if you're a prison officer looking after Glitter and you haven't had the jab, you're not going to be happy."

A government spokesman told the newspaper: "Prisoners are being vaccinated at the same time as the general public and in line with the priority groups set out by the independent Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation."

According to the latest government figures, more than 12 million people have now received their first dose of the vaccine.
