All of Us Strangers director Andrew Haigh has praised Paul Mescal for his "pretty fearless" approach to filming gay sex scenes in the movie.

The film - based on a 1980s Japanese novel - follows 40-something writer Adam (Andrew Scott) and his younger neighbour Harry (Mescal), who become romantically involved after a drunken night together.

In a twist, Adam returns to his childhood home and discovers his dead parents - played by Jamie Bell and Claire Foy - seemingly alive and not having aged in 30 years.

Haigh has gained acclaim for his portrayal of gay romances in the past, having directed the acclaimed indie flick Weekend and the HBO series Looking, but has revealed that he has evolved his style for the new film.

"I've been more objective in how I've shot sex scenes in the past," he told Vanity Fair. "Here, I really wanted to feel the subjective nature of having sex and what it feels like - the nervousness and the excitement and the physical sensation of being touched by someone else, and what that does to you."

On Mescal and Scott, he added: "There was chemistry between the two of them literally the second I saw them together.

"Both of them were pretty fearless. There was no sense of them being afraid of approaching those scenes. They knew how important they were."

All of Us Strangers is due for release on December 22.
