EastEnders actress Harriet Thorpe has said that her character Elaine has reached "the final straw" with Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins) amid dramatic Christmas scenes.
In Christmas Day's episodes, Cindy's affair with Junior (Micah Balfour) - the son of Elaine's husband and Cindy's ex-husband George (Colin Salmon) - was exposed in front of a packed Queen Vic via a leaked audio recording.
The tape also revealed that Cindy still harboured feelings for George, who later berated his son for taking what was 'his' - a comment that put Elaine's nose further out of joint.
At the end of the episode, Cindy was hit over the head with a shovel and left for dead by a mystery assailant, and Elaine is now one of the many suspects in the frame for the crime.
"The thing is Elaine is, and always has been, about survival," Thorpe said at a recent press event, in quotes carried by the Radio Times. "There's no lengths to which she will not go because holding on to something that matters and helping things stay in her control is everything... no pressure."
She continued: "She tries to have a front all the time, but Cindy's been tearing her down since the get-go, and I think this is the final straw..."
The identity of Cindy's attacker will be revealed during an explosive week of episodes marking EastEnders' 40th anniversary in February.
