Russell T Davies describes the next episode of Doctor Who, '73 Yards', as "Welsh folk horror".

Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has described the next episode of the show as a "Welsh folk horror".

In the episode, '73 Yards' - penned by RTD himself - The Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and Ruby (Millie Gibson) land in the Welsh countryside as the weather turns into a foreboding rainstorm.

Ruby ends up alone and seeking refuge in a pub, where the locals are sitting in fear of "ancient legends" coming to life.

Talking to the Doctor Who Podcast, Davies said: "I literally had to go and stand on Swansea Pier and work out exactly what '73 Yards' was to make this story work - that'll make sense when you see it.

"This is Welsh folk horror coming up, with an astonishing cast.

"It's spooky, it's strange, it's genuinely unlike any other episode we've ever done before. We all found ourselves fascinated by making this. We had to test so much and get so much exactly right.

"It's very strange, 73 yards is very significantly important. Pay attention to those scrolls at the beginning and you might wonder what the message means: 'Rest in peace, Mad Jack'."

Doctor Who: 73 Yards is released this Saturday at midnight UK on iPlayer and on Friday at 7pm ET on Disney+ in the rest of the world.
