Coronation Street actor Luca Toolan has said that he believes his character Mason is genuinely "trying to change his life around".
Having arrived in the cobbles in 2023, bad boy Mason became involved in a hard-hitting storyline that saw his bullying of Liam (Charlie Wrenshall) drive the teenager to the brink of suicide - actions that led to Mason being sent to prison.
Upon his release Mason was back in Weatherfield in the summer and appears to be on a path to rehabilitation, first being taken under the wing of Stu (Charlie Fellows) and more recently, Tim (Joe Duttine) and Sally (Sally Dynevor).
"I definitely think Mason has changed," Toolan said of Mason's recent demeanour. "I think you've got to remember how much rubbish this troubled lad has been through. Mason has gone to jail, then gone to jail again for something he didn't actually do, his brothers torment him and now he's so clearly trying to change his life around.
"The easier option for Mason would be to give in and join his brothers, but I think it speaks volumes about where his head is at because he's fighting against it and wants better for himself, which is a really brave thing for him to do."
Mason now looks set to become more intertwined with the Metcalfes, and 20-year-old Toolan admitted his delight at working with soap stalwarts Duttine and Dynevor.
"It's absolutely mint," he enthused. "Joe and Sally are a force to be reckoned with. Joe is as dry as it comes, [a] Yorkshire lad through and through and just absolutely hilarious to be on set with.
"Sally is just the loveliest woman in the world who brings so much good energy, so it's been an absolute pleasure working with them.
"As for Mason, it's also been so nice for him. He's a kid who has had a horrific upbringing and to have people who will actually act like a cohesive parent couple isn't something that Mason has experienced before."
Coronation Street continues Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 7am on ITVX and at 8pm on ITV1.
